This hidden gem is not visible for the most part until you do a little looking. In the 1970’s while living in Portland, I would drive to the coast on Highway 18. I would see the big sign proclaiming Sheridan, The Home of Sheridan Days, and then drive past the Dairy Queen, (which was then the Reel Buck Fish Market) and a couple of residences at the intersection of Highway 18 and Gopher Valley Road. Nothing else visible from the highway looked like a town. I thought, "big sign for such a small community."
Only after I began thinking about relocating to Yamhill County, did I discover something much different. Being a small town advocate, I felt that McMinnville & Newberg were too large and wanted to check out all the small towns in Yamhill County. My initial impressions of the other small towns in the vicinity were not all positive, but I got off the main highway and found the hidden gem of Sheridan. The streets were clean and the town was attractive with a nice mix of small businesses and well-maintained homes. It was a perfect place to raise my 5-year-old daughter. A small town is like a fishbowl where parents know what type of mischief their kids have been getting into before they even get home. I know because I was raised in such a community. It turned out that relocating to Sheridan was a good choice and we much enjoyed our ten years living in the community.
